Matthew Gailey

Matthew Gailey is a singer and songwriter with roots in Modern Folk, Alternative and Jazz. He is currently splitting his time between his original music centered around Alternative Folk, Soul and Indie Jazz as well as performing Jazz Standards with other Portland artists and groups including The Bureau of Standards Big Band.

Matthew began singing in his church gospel choir at age four and went on to study music at Florida Southern College and Indiana University. During his time at Florida Southern College Matthew had a unique opportunity to study jazz improvisation with the late jazz legend Nat Adderly and performed regularly with several jazz groups. While attending Indiana University's prestigous Opera Theatre and Jazz graduate programs, Gailey sang with the David Baker, Pat Harbison and Tom Walsh Jazz Bands and performed numerous roles in musicals and opera with the Indiana University Opera Theater. It was also at IU that he had the opportunity to work with conductor Dale Rieling and stage director Greg Ganakas in his stage debut as Dickon Sowersby in The Secret Garden. Other conductors and directors he has collaborated with include Maestro David Effron, Michael Ehrman, Vince Liotta, and Colin Graham. Gailey also studied acting and movement with George Pinney at Indiana University. Matthew has also collaborated with guitarist/arranger Cameron Mizell and was featured on preservationrecords.com debut release "Project Bloomington" which presented talented emerging artists from the Bloomington area.

Matthew is now living in the Portland area with his wife Sara and their cat Doodle and is currently collaborating with local musicians. Matthew's Portland collaborations include performances with Andre St James, Ron Steen and Clay Giberson. Stay tuned!
